Our minds function as the control towers of our thoughts, guiding our beliefs and actions in various situations. Just as a printing press cannot create a book on its own without human input, our thinking is essential for shaping the narratives that define our lives. When external influences, particularly artificial ones like algorithms, begin to dominate our thought processes, we enter a new landscape where careful consideration if necessary. Instead of engaging in independent thought, we find ourselves relying on "careful thinking" to navigate these changes.
While many view AI—often represented by chatbots like ChatGPT—as a fascinating tool that simplifies tasks, we must question its impact on our cognitive autonomy. In our pursuit of convenience, we often embrace innovations that promise ease and efficiency, and AI fits this mold perfectly. However, as we integrate AI deeper into our lives, we must remain vigilant about its potential to take control of our thought processes.
This book, “AI - Careful Thinking,” aims to foster a mindful approach to AI usage, encouraging readers to reflect critically on its implications rather than simply consuming information. For those who understand the stakes, it’s crucial to recognize how easily our mental frameworks can be influenced.
“AI - Careful Thinking” is a “perspective book” versus an information book. For the new person to AI, you will learn a great deal of information about AI. For the Silicon Valley gurus, this book will be a yawner. I want you to know that I am as much of fan of AI as I am my smartphone. I use my smartphone every day. I have AI features in my car for safety. I use AI applications for my movie selections, grocery shopping and in my profession of coaching. But, my message to myself and to you, the reader, is not to get swept up in AI as absolute truth. Even the algorithms and deep learning behind AI prove that human error is inevitable. AI cannot think on its own. And, even if they tell you that someday it can, you cannot legislate away human error.
